What is a HERS Rating? The nation's leading "miles-per-gallon" equivalent for homes.
Southern Valley Services offers HERS Ratings (Home Energy Rating System Ratings) throughout our region. A Home Energy Rating is a requirement for many green building programs and can be used to meet energy code compliance requirements and is the nation's leading "miles-per-gallon" equivalent for homes.
What is a HERS Rating?
A HERS Rating assigns a home a score on a scale from 0-150, with lower numbers representing less energy consumption (a HERS score of 0 represents a "zero energy home," which produces at least as much energy as it consumes), and higher numbers representing greater energy consumption. A standard new home would receive a score of around 85, and most existing homes fall somewhere between 100 and 150. To meet the current International Energy Conservation Code of Alabama's ERI path a home needs to receive a HERS Index Rating of 70 or below.

What are the Benefits of a HERS Rating?
A HERS Rating is a requirement for many green building and ENERGY STAR for Homes. A HERS Rating is also a requirement for an Energy Efficient Mortgage (EEM) and/or an Energy Improvement Mortgage (EIM). Further, it can be a great way for builders and realtors to set their homes apart in a crowded real estate market -- a good HERS score is an objective, measured representation of a home's energy efficiency. Much as miles-per-gallon fuel efficiency ratings for automobiles play an increasingly important role in car-buyers' decisions, a Home Energy Rating may soon play an equally important role in the homebuying process for homebuyers across the country.
